BEC-Baltimore presents: The Foundations of
Fenestrations in Historic Buildings

Please join BEC-Baltimore and Building Envelope Consultants and Scientists to review fenestration types such as windows, curtainwalls, skylights, and other openings to aid building owners, property managers and designers in practical decision making when considering maintenance, renewal, or replacement programs, specifically for historic structures. The session will also review air, thermal, and water testing of repaired and replaced fenestrations and the use of mock-ups and prototypes during the design phases of project development, as well as, their use during quality assurance testing during restoration.

In this session, participants will learn:

  • Leak Investigations and How Surrounding Substrates May Contribute to Leaks;
  • Factors to Consider When Evaluating Historic Fenestrations;
  • The Use of Mock-Up and Prototypes;
  • Understanding of Different Testing Methods; and
  • Evaluating the Risk And Cost Factors Of Renewal Vs. Replacement Programs.

Biographies

Mark K. Howell, Executive Vice President, BECS
Mark has a Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management Technology and two Associate degrees; Civil Engineering Technology and Architectural Technology. He is a recognized leader in the building envelope preservation and performance industry and has been involved in the investigation and restoration of many contemporary and historic structures over his 25 plus year career. Mark also belongs to the Association for Preservation Technology International as well as IIBEC– International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants

Mark has made numerous presentations at national industry conferences as well as owner organizations and is a continuing education provider for the American Institute of Architects and a BOMI certified trainer for the Building Owner Manager Association. Over the years he has published articles and made presentations regarding the access of structures, building envelope technologies, the use of mock-ups, solving roof problems, historic preservation, corrosion solutions, and masonry strengthening as well as other technology and building preservation topics. Mark is a former adjunct teacher for the Preservation Program at Harford Community College and has been a guest lecturer for several colleges and universities.

As the Branch Manager of the Baltimore office of BECS, Mark will be building the consulting business from Baltimore to Philadelphia where Mark started his career. His 25 plus years of experience as a restoration contractor preserving historic and contemporary structures will be a valuable resource for working directly with owners, property managers, developers, architects and others in the investigation, solution building, budget development and managing of contractors in the preservation and improved performance of existing structures.

JP McDonald, P.E., Vice President, BECS
JP McDonald brings over 15 years of experience as an engineer specializing in the consulting and testing of architectural products and façade assemblies. He has managed and performed quality control and investigative air, water, thermal, acoustic field testing services in addition to expert witness, peer review and product evaluation services.

JP has specialized experience in laboratory product testing, laboratory project mockup testing and on-site field testing relating to air infiltration, water penetration, acoustics and structural performance during new construction or renovation, as well as building enclosure commissioning. His experience extends to building enclosure consulting on new construction projects including shop drawing reviews, submittal reviews, construction administration/inspections, and consulting services regarding building envelope performance.
